Why EV air conditioning needs special attention

Electric cars rely on climate control not just for comfort, but also for battery thermal management. An inefficient A/C system can affect range and internal systems, especially in warmer months.

The client reported reduced cooling performance on hot days, even with the A/C set to full. No strange noises or warning lights, but clear symptoms of low refrigerant:

• Weak cold air from the vents
• Long time to cool down cabin
• High cabin humidity
• Slight whirring sound from under the bonnet (A/C struggling)

Because the ID.4 uses the newer R-1234yf refrigerant — which is more environmentally friendly than older gases — it requires modern, EV-compatible servicing equipment and procedures.

Workshop process: Regassing the VW ID.4 with R-1234yf

We began by connecting the vehicle to our air conditioning service station, which is certified for R-1234yf systems. Here’s the full process:

1. System pressure test – to confirm low gas level but no major leaks
2. Refrigerant recovery – safely extract any remaining gas from the system
3. Vacuum test – at least 20 minutes under vacuum to ensure a sealed system
4. Oil & dye injection – EV-safe PAG oil and UV dye added for lubrication and future leak detection
5. Precise regas – recharged with manufacturer-specified volume of R-1234yf refrigerant
6. Performance check – vent temperature test and full climate control run-through

Vent temperatures dropped to a consistent 5°C shortly after regas — ideal cooling for summer driving.

Safety and compliance with R-1234yf

Handling R-1234yf requires specific training and certified equipment due to its flammability classification. At Pitair Motors, all our A/C technicians are certified to handle modern refrigerants, especially those used in hybrid and electric vehicles.

We always use the correct gas volume, pressure settings, and EV-safe lubricants — helping maintain both comfort and system longevity.

EV-specific A/C system notes

Unlike combustion cars, the Volkswagen ID.4 doesn’t have a belt-driven A/C compressor. Instead, it uses an electric unit integrated into the high-voltage system. This means:

• The compressor can operate even with the engine off (great for pre-cooling via app)
• There's no "engine load" effect during A/C use
• A regas helps maintain both comfort and efficiency

Regular A/C servicing ensures the system doesn’t overwork or degrade prematurely.

Customer feedback and final result

After the regas, the client noticed immediate improvements — colder air, faster cooling, and quieter system operation. We also explained the importance of a 2-year aircon service interval for EVs and offered a service reminder setup.
