With summer temperatures rising, more drivers are noticing that their car’s air conditioning isn’t keeping up — and hybrid vehicles are no exception. This week, we serviced a Lexus CT200h whose owner reported that the system was no longer producing cold air, especially in traffic or at idle.
After a brief inspection, we confirmed the issue: low refrigerant gas in the system. This is a common occurrence, especially in vehicles that haven’t had a climate service in the past 2–3 years.
Why A/C gas leaks slowly over time
Even if there are no visible leaks, refrigerant can escape slowly through seals, hose joints, and microscopic pores in the system. It’s especially common in hybrids like the Lexus CT200h, where the A/C system may run differently depending on driving mode.
Signs your Lexus may need an aircon re-gas:
- Warm air blowing from vents, even with A/C on
- A/C works while driving but not at idle
- Windscreen demisting takes longer
- Increased fan noise with no cooling effect
- You haven’t serviced the system in over 2 years
System diagnosis & recovery
We started with a full A/C system test using our R134a refrigerant station — the Lexus CT200h still uses this gas type, as opposed to newer R1234yf systems.
The steps we followed:
- Connect system to diagnostic machine
We recorded system pressures and confirmed they were below manufacturer spec. - Vacuum & leak test
We pulled a vacuum for over 20 minutes and confirmed there were no leaks present in the loop. - Recharging refrigerant
The correct volume of R134a refrigerant was added, along with fresh PAG oil and UV tracer dye for future diagnostics if needed. - Performance check
Once re-gassed, we tested vent temperature — and within minutes, the system was blowing ice-cold at around 4.5°C.
Lexus CT200h AC regas complete — with noticeable results.
Hybrid A/C system tip
Unlike conventional cars, the CT200h uses an electric-driven compressor, which allows the A/C to run even when the petrol engine is off. That means your cooling system works harder during start-stop traffic — and loses gas slightly faster over time.
For this reason, we recommend having the car air conditioning system checked at least every two years.
Final touch: Cabin air filter check
As part of every air conditioning service, we offer to check the pollen/cabin filter too. In this case, the filter was still clean — but we advised the owner to replace it during their next service, especially if they suffer from allergies or drive in city traffic.
